There is just a super thin layer of steamed milk making the coffee look white, hence the name ‘Flat White’. ![]() The way the coffees are made is different, that’s the reason why they all have a different taste. This is mainly because all 3 coffees use the same ingredients. A ristretto is made using the same brewing process as an espresso but has a coffee to water ratio of 1:1 compared to 1:1.5 of an espresso. The ratio of milk is merely enough to reduce the acidity of the espresso. A Cortado is a petite espresso and milk-based beverage built to a 1:1 ratio of espresso and microtextured steamed milk usually made in a 60-90ml vessel. The most common term is ‘espresso cut with milk’. Usually the Latte coffee pod, the Cappuccino and the Flat White are seen as the same coffee. A flat white is a coffee drink that is made with a much stronger espresso shot, a ristretto, concretely a double ristretto. Derived from Spain, and refers to the dilution of coffee with milk. The milk in a Flat White coffee is silky smooth and therefore mixes really well with the ristretto. But what is a Flat White coffee? The composition of the Flat White makes the difference in taste. It’s not another Cappuccino or Latte, even though it’s also made with espresso or ristretto and milk. Flat White has quickly become a beloved favourite. Known for its three distinctive layers of milk, espresso and milk foam, the latte macchiato is loved in many countries. ![]()
